Has Hot Dog Eating Found Its 'Rocky'?

I was in the audience a few weeks ago when Sonya Thomas (aka The Black Widow) dusted her own crabcake eating record. Yesterday, another of Thomas's records fell, but this time it wasn't the 98-lb wonder who did the breaking.

Competitive eater and world record holder (pork ribs, waffles, jalapeno poppers) Joey Chestnut bested Thomas's record of 42 hot dogs and buns by downing 50 in 12 minutes... 18 more than he ate in competition last year.

The performance in the Las Vegas qualifier for the July 4th Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest establishes Chestnut as a serious contender, but is this a one-time performance? Can he seriously challenge the great Kobayashi (who holds the record of 53.5 dogs and buns)?

Only time will tell...

You were in Baltimore for the crabcake contest? So was I. I was right up front and got some great pics for my blog (megamunch.blogspot.com).

Hard to say how many dogs Sonya will eat this weekend during her Philly qualifier. Some say she'll only eat as many as it take to qualify. Others say she's extremely competitive and will try to top Chestnut's mark. Either way, I wish I were going to be there!
