May is National Burger Month... Free Burgers, Free Stuff

The weather has warmed up nicely and even my seasonal allergies (damn you trees!) seem to be subsiding. What better time to get the backyard grill fired up and ready to celebrate National Burger Month?

Turns out that May is just such a month, which makes sense given the warmer temps, longer days, and holidays like Mother's Day and Memorial Day that just beg for outdoor grub. I'm not exactly sure when this month-long cause for celebration got its start, but I found a 1999 press release in which fast-food burger pioneers White Castle declares their intention to sponsor the event. Not to be outdone, slyder rival Krystal owns the domain nationalburgermonth.com although a quick perusal reveals that it still features 2009 dates.

The month of grilled, fried, broiled and steamed fun kicks off today with free burgers from the Back Yard Burgers chain. Participating locations will be giving away free burgers to the first 100 customers starting at 10 am. If – like THG – you don't have a BYB nearby you can still visit their website and sign up for their eClub and win Weber Grills, Backyard Grill Kits and more.

Stay tuned to THG throughout National Burger Month for links to cool burger sites, burger recipes, weekly burger reviews and more.
