Eggheads, NASA Working to Prevent "Red Wine Headache"?

I have certainly had a red wine hangover but this article on the Wired web site talks about the "red wine headache" like it's something everybody has...

The effects are all too familiar: a fancy dinner, some fine wine and then, a few hours later, a racing heart and a pounding headache. But a device developed by University of California, Berkeley, researchers could help avoid the dreaded "red wine headache."

Chemists working with NASA-funded technology designed to find life on Mars have created a device they say can easily detect chemicals that many scientists believe can turn wine and other beloved indulgences into ingredients for agony.

Personally, I'm far more familiar with the "cheap white wine" headache, which I seem to get every time I drink a bottle of white wine that costs less than $10 a bottle. And I know that The Hungover Gourmet circa 1988 would have killed for something that would dull the headache caused by mixing boxed white wine and Mountain Dew. Over ice.

Gotta love Philly BYOs. Under $10? You must have been a high roller. $10 can buy enough wine for ten people. How did you come up with the boxed wine and mountain dew?

LOL... yep, back in my Drexel days I did more than my share of Thunderbird. We used to have T-Bird and pasta parties. Ouch, bad hangovers after those nights. I'm definitely a "high roller" these days. I'll go cheap on red wine but I typically won't pay less than $10 for white, though I did find a really good cheap white wine whose name escapes me at the moment.

As for the Winedew, it was born out of a sicko desire to mix an alcohol-fueled buzz with the caffeinated zing of the Dew. It should come as no surprise that a shore house inspired this!

I actually have the "red wine headache" problem, and no one seems to believe it exists! It can be a bother sometimes if I'm out to a nice dinner and people want to get a bottle of wine - they keep insisting that I've just been drinking cheap stuff and that's why I get a headache. Nope... I get it with good red wine, middling red wine, and crappy red wine. I feel like I'm missing out on some sort of foodie experience when I have to pass on it, but hey, I know that in an hour I'll be curled in a ball and taking four asprin.

And I've gotten those same headaches the few times I've had one of those really, really rich mocha-type coffee drinks, too...

So, it's beer, gin & tonics, and plain old coffee for me...

Hopefully they'll be able to find a cure for this! That definitely sucks since a glass of red wine with dinner is one of my all-time favorite things.

Y'know, that may be one reason why I just don't drink that much wine. Although white gives me a headache too.
