Today in History... 1st Canned Beer Goes on Sale

It's hard for me to imagine a world without canned beer, but the product wasn't introduced until this date in 1935 when lucky drinkers in Richmond, VA were treated to cans of Krueger's Finest Beer and Krueger's Cream Ale. The marketing drew overwhelmingly positive reaction (91% apparently approved of the product) and the life of college students everywhere was changed forever.

Some of my fondest – and cloudiest – memories involve canned beer. From the giant beer can pyramids built at college-era shore houses and the bags of beer cans than would spill from our car as we assured drive-in theater security that we were not drinking to pooling all our pocket change to purchase the cheapest canned beer possible for another hazy Friday spent cutting class at the college radio station.

And let us not forget the wonderfully 70s hobby of beer can collecting.
