Win $30M in Smithfield Cooking Contest

Got a great recipe that uses Fresh Ham, Smoked Pork Chops, Fresh Pork, Bacon, Smoked Sausage or even lunchmeat? Then get cracking in the kitchen and whip up an entry for the Cookin' with Smithfield Contest.

They're looking for entrees, side dishes, appetizers, sandwiches, soups and more featuring a Smithfield product and 10 ingredients or less. There's a nice $30,000 first prize, though there's also the chance you'll have to meet Paula Deen.

Hey, I never said it was going to be easy.

What is it with Food Network hosts? I liked Paula Deen at first, but as with Emeril, Rachel Ray, Alton Brown and way too many others to mention, they turn into annoying caricatures of what made them appealing in the first place. I'm already sick of The Neelys, although I have to admit my jaw dropped when they made deep-fried deviled eggs. (Is anything safe from the heart-clogging basket?) Guy Fieri is milking his questionable appeal to make some fast cash and getting a chance to travel the country on Food Network's dime. Can't blame him because I'd like to have that gig. Anyway, I know this has nothing to do with Smithfield, but seeing Deen's name opened the door for me to vent. All the best...

Fidge: I couldn't echo your sentiments more. The network has never heard that too much of something is just that... too much. Whatever happened to some of the more likable people they've intro'd over the last few years... like The Hungry Detective or Ham on the Street? Seems they're more interested in recycling old shows with new hosts. That Ted Allen show seems a lot like Secret Life Of and Unwrapped and isn't Rescue Chef just Food 911 without Tyler Florence?

Not even getting into the stories about possible workplace conditions at their Tar Heel, NC, plant, Paula is - lamentably - becoming an irritating caricature of herself. I myself can certainly still stand her, but she jumped the shark with that fried stuffing on a stick, and had I not been frozen in complete shock I would have turned the TV off after seeing her Krispy Kreme burger that used TWO Krispy Kreme donuts as hamburger buns. I know that Southern food is not healthy and all, but I know no Southerner who eats like that! (Or anyone else in the country for that matter.)

But despite that, I can easily watch Paula Deen. However, and I never thought I'd say this, but I have to admit that Sandra Lee and Rachael Ray are no longer the most irritating "chef-lebrities" on the Food Network. Guy Fieri owns that distinction now.

As for that recipe: But wouldn't that be $30K? No recipe is worth $30M!

The Krispy Kreme Burger was, I believe, an invention of the Gateway Grizzlies minor league baseball team. They're known for their heart-stopping ballpark food including the Deep Fried Slider.

Agree wholeheartedly about Fieri. The problem is that it's a topic that I enjoy but I simply can't stand him.

As for the award amount, I come from the world of printing where we use the Roman Numeral M to abbreviate 1000, such as Cost Per Thousand being abbreviated as Cost/M.

I like watching cooking shows and I do like how these shows are teaching and encouraging Americans to cook and to be more adventurous with food, but I for one do not agree with the way these T.V. chefs are being hyped up and celebritized. I find that sickening.
I'd have to agree with some people here about Guy Fieri. I think he's annoying too. How long is he going to keep that hairstyle? I feel bad for those restaurant owners who feel they are required to give out their secret recipes only because they have a camera placed in front of their faces.
