Peach Melba Metropolitan from The Complete Cheese Cookbook (1971)

Happy National Peach Melba Day! I'm going to be honest, I had to look up what the heck Peach Melba even is. Apparently it was invented by Auguste Escoffier at London's Savoy Hotel in honor of Nellie Melba, an Australian soprano. Leave it up to the fine folks at Kraft to figure out a way to get some whipped cream cheese into your peach melba in order to create Peach Melba Metropolitan (from 'The Complete Cheese Cookbook', Kraft Foods, 1971). Florida Celery Fingers from The Magic of Florida Celery (date unknown)

As I've mentioned, I have a collection of thousands of advertising recipe pamphlets dating back to the early 1900s (and even a handful of older ones). For some of the folks tasked with putting these together–I'm looking at you Pillsbury and Betty Crocker–it had to have been like shooting fish in a barrel. But pity the poor folks who had to create 'The Magic of Florida Celery' (Florida Celery Industry, Orlando, Florida, date unknown). It's a lovely 20-page piece with full-color photos and fun facts/tips about nature's toothbrush ("Use a celery stalk for scraping the sides of your blender."), but no amount of Oriental lanterns, chopsticks, decorative tea sets and horseshoes can disguise the fact that the main ingredient of all these dishes is, well, celery. But enough of my yapping, you're going to need to rush to the store if you're going to whip up some Florida Celery Fingers and Florida Celery Pinwheels for tonight's National Championship Game. Your Grocery Store is a Sugary Mine Field of Processed Junk

My normal grocery shopping routine has changed over the last year or so.

I used to shop almost exclusively at Giant with the occasional stop at ShopRite or – if I felt like braving the parking lot (and craved their macaroni salad) – Wegmans.

But the opening of an ALDI about a mile away has drastically changed how I shop. While I was skeptical at first and had a sorely misplaced view of what ALDI offered, I am a full-fledge ALDI-vangelist at this point. The limited selection and lower price points mean I am in and out in about 20 minutes and I've cut my weekly grocery bill by 30% to 50%.

Oh sure, there are still things I can't get at my beloved ALDI but if I make one mid-week trip to Giant that about covers my needs.

Which means I'm out of practice at least as far as wildly over the top limited edition seasonal items go. So, when I had to stop at the Mega-Wal-Mart up the road for turkey wings the other day, I was taken aback by what a gauntlet of sugar-frosted monstrosities the aisles held.

Luckily, my daughter never liked sugary cereals, doesn't drink soda and is still pretty good about keeping her snacking at bay despite closing in on 6' before she hits her teenage years so if any of this stuff DOES appear in our pantry it's because I'm such a mark.

Here are just a few of the processed "treats" that await you this holiday season...

The Elf on the Shelf might come in handy to get your kids to behave after a couple bowls of the "Official Cereal of the North pole".

This cereal doesn't even try to hide behind a corporate shill or some kind of health benefit.

The post-breakfast crash should be over just in time for a healthy lunch. Or you can just give them this.

I think these were some kind of tie-in with FROZEN 2 but in looking at the package now I'm not so sure. Maybe they were just trying to capitalize on the flick without actually coughing up the csah to slap a talking snowman on the box. Either way the filling looks like toothpaste.

No Wonder Mrs. Norris Needs Malt: Vintage Beer Ads for the Ladies

I loves me some vintage advertising.

Whether it's star athletes promoting the latest developments in smokes or some deadly-looking chrome baby seat that your toddler can stand up in it makes you wonder why we even bother with all the helmets, knee pads, gluten-free foods, baby monitors and outlet covers we take part in these days.

"Hey, I turned out fine, how come YOU get a car seat?! If a laundry basket was good enough for your mother..."

Sorry. Got a little off-track there.

Beer ads are great, too, and just in time for St. Patrick's Day comes this collection of vintage beer ads featuring the ladies. And, trust me, as a work-at-home Dad with a five-year old I know exactly why Mrs. Norris needs malt.
