Happy National Beer Lover's Day!

It's somehow fitting that the first Sunday of the 2025 NFL season just happens to fall on National Beer Lover's Day.

Maryland, my current home, ranks 23rd in the nation with 134 craft breweries. That translates to 2.9 breweries per 100,000 adults of legal drinking age. (Click graphic for full-size image.)

Find out where your state ranks here. — Dan Taylor

Dan Taylor is the editor/publisher of The Hungover Gourmet. He will be celebrating National Beer Lover's Day by drinking some delicious GOAT IPA brewed here in Baltimore by the fine folks at Union Brewing.

New Pepsi Sold in Japan Claims to "Block" Fat

Pepsi Special, a new soda being sold by PepsiCo in Japan, claims you can eat a hamburger and a pizza without any of the fat being absorbed. As long as you drink some Pepsi Special along with it, that is. (Forget the fact that nobody needs to be eating pizza and a hamburger or a pizza and anything. Show some restraint, people.)

The miracle ingredient in the soda is Dextrin, a fat-blocking fiber that allegedly prevents the body from absorbing fat, though the US Food and Drug Administration has yet to buy these claims.

For those hoping that Pepsi Special will allow them to indulge with wild abandon, let me remind you of a little thing called Olestra, a food additive that offered consumers guilt-free, fat-free snack indulgence through items like the WOW! line of chips and snacks.

Named by Time magazine as one of the 50 Worst Inventions of all-time, Olestra may have given consumers fat-free chips but it also gave them cramps, gas and the dreaded "anal leakage".

Wine Pairings for Halloween Treats

If there's one thing I've really enjoyed about recent food and wine writing on the web has been the de-snobbing of wine.

Oh sure, there are still plenty of wine snobs out there who wouldn't use the table plonk I quaff to rinse their glasses, but some wine sites have even shown a sense of humor (gasp!) by breaking down and pairing wines with, say, fast food.

So I had to smile when I was reading Bottlenotes and stumbled upon this article about the right wines to pair with your Halloween treats.

Boxed Wine Inventor Dies, THG Emerges from Seclusion

Late last night, as I was watching Duke narrowly escape with an NCAA title, I realized that it had been almost two months since I posted anything to the blog. It's certainly not due to indifference or a lack of things to say. I've just been in my annual work pressure-cooker brought on by client catalogs and various other first-quarter projects.

As I watched the seconds tick off the clock, a last minute half-court heave by Butler clang off the rim (doh!), and Duke players don the ugliest championship t-shirts in NCAA history I vowed that I would rectify the situation with this here blog.

Who knew a handmade topic would arrive via a Facebook post from a friend?

Alas, it's with a heavy heart and pounding head that I report the death of Thomas Angove at the age of 92. For me, Angove ranks up there with the guy who invented the Filet-O-Fish – he took a great product (in his case, wine) and improved the delivery system (he put it in a box, or more accurately, a cask inside a box).

For years "boxed wine" or "wine in a box" was scoffed at by the press and purists. It probably wasn't helped by the cheap price and cheap product it was usually associated with, but our shore house wasn't complete without a big ass box of cheap white wine crammed in the fridge. From its magical spout I would dispense just the right amount to combine with a beer mug of Mountain Dew to create the delightful White Trash Spritzer, a refreshing (and sticky) summertime concoction that usually led to a jackhammer pulse rate, a warm, happy buzz... and a pounding headache the next day.

These days the wine box has – like screw caps on wine bottles – achieved a certain level of respectability. I'm glad Angove lived to see his invention achieve greatness and that he didn't listen to his teenage son who scoffed at the idea of cask wine back in the 1960s.

Cheers, Mr. Wine in a Box.

Get Decadent Baltimore

Do you feel left out while the kids are devising their trick or treat strategy in order to maximize their candy haul? Do you find yourself secretly hoping they leave their Halloween goodies unguarded so you can grab a Snickers bar to go along with a cold Natty Boh?

Don't sell yourself short Baltimore! Treat yourself to an Evening of Decadence at Morton's Steakhouse on October 28th and sample hors d'oeuvres from Morton's, premier Vosges chocolate and a selection of Piper champagnes.

Guests will arrive to a reception featuring Morton's signature hors d'oeuvres and Piper Sonoma Brut. After the reception, guests will begin taking part in the exceptional pairing of Champagne and chocolate using sensory vials which contain an essence (lilac, etc) that will pull that flavor out of the chocolate and champagne.

For more information, please visit www.mortons.com or call Judi DiGioia at 410-547-8255.

Let's Get f'REAL

"Milkshake" and "convenience" are not words that usually go together. And while a thick, frosty shake isn't exactly what I'd call a thirst-quencher, there's something about (happily) struggling to get that ice cold, creamy concoction up a straw that lends itself to lazing about on a hot summer day.

Unfortunately, grabbing a milkshake has never been the easiest thing in the world. In fact, other than a fast food joint like McDonald's – whose "shakes" have long been the subject of dark, nasty and unfounded rumors – I wouldn't know where to get one that didn't involve making one myself (a process that would include finding our blender) or sitting down to order one. I suppose ice cream parlors (I think I'm dating myself with that terminology) serve them but it's not like they're on every corner, even if I had the time to leisurely kick back for a shake.

Enter the f'REAL, the invention of Jim Farrell, fellow milkshake lover and a man who knew there had to be a better way. I was vaguely familiar with the company's blender kiosks and squat refrigerated cases that sat in some of the Wawas I would frequent during my travels, but I readily admit that: a) I'm a Wawa purist and tend to only purchase hoagies, chips, Diet Lemonade Tea, soft pretzels, and coffee; and, b) I'm usually in a hurry whenever I'm in a Wawa and rarely take the time to stop and smell the roses, so to speak.

In other words, I'm a creature of habit. So when the fine folks at f'REAL offered me the opportunity to give their handy – and interactive – milkshakes a try I couldn't resist.

I'd been walking around with a couple f'REAL coupons in my wallet for a few weeks but was always in too much of a rush to get to the beach or eat my hoagie to succumb to the allure of their high-tech gadgetry. But on a recent trip to LBI the milkshake gods started nudging me, reminding me of the opportunity that lay before me. While stopping midway for gas and dinner one night the guy in front of me was buying a f'REAL... a day or so later another customer in line had a f'REAL as I ordered up my morning coffee. These were literally the first people I'd ever seen buying these.

I got the hint. It was time to get f'REAL.

Unfortunately, the Wawa on the Boulevard in Beach Haven was out of the limited edition Cookie Dough flavor. In fact, the refrigerated case seemed low on most flavors which I suppose is a good sign for the folks at f'REAL. With Cookie Dough out of the mix I opted instead for Cookies and Cream which combines ice cream with crushed Oreo or Oreo-like cookies. (Other regular flavors include Chocolate, Vanilla, Strawberry, Chocolate Malt and Mint Chip which is available from February through May.)

After choosing the plastic cup filled with the frozen blend of ice cream and dairy-fresh milk from the case, I popped the lid, chose my preferred blend (regular, one of three options) and stepped back while the blender did the rest. About a minute later I had my f'REAL.

As somebody who doesn't have a sweet tooth I was actually a little concerned that the shake would blast me with a sugary, too sweet concoction I'd be passing off. Not the case. Though the regular blend mode left some of the ice cream a bit too solid, requiring some deft work with my straw, the resulting shake was eventually creamy and refreshingly cold, like slightly melted ice cream before it turns to ice cream soup. As we drove down the Garden State Parkway I happily worked away at my shake, noisily slurping up the last bits and almost waking my daughter in the process.

Available in Milkshake, Smoothie and Frozen Cappuccino blends, f'REAL products run about $2.50 and are available at convenience stores around the country. In addition to the standard flavors, exclusive, limited edition offerings are available at selected convenience stores, such as the Reese's Peanut Butter Cup shake available now at Sheetz.

Color Me Jealous

Last week my niece and I were joking around about my encounter with the Burger King Loaded Steakhouse Burger and she asked me, though I can't recall her exact words, why I try these things when I know there's a very good chance they're going to be terrible.

Frankly, I didn't really have an answer for her. Maybe I'm making up for all the lost time when I was the world's pickiest eater and rarely strayed from a very rigid culinary regimen. I'd like to think I'm doing it for you, the members of The Hungover Gourmet Nation, but that's a pretty small nation.

I guess I do it because I'm an optimist. I'm always hoping that one of these sandwiches or other fast food concoctions is going to rock my world and make it all worthwhile.

I have a feeling one of the things that would "rock my world and make it all worthwhile" is the Carl's Jr. Cap'n Crunch Shake. Alas, I don't think there's a Carl's Jr. anywhere near here so I have to hope that it'll make its way to Hardee's, the Carl's Jr of the East Coast.

Thanks to Rod Lott of Bookgasm for bringing the Cap'n Crunch Shake to my attention.

RECESSION GOURMET: Starbucks to Reward Repeat Customers

In an effort to get you coming and going, Starbucks is rewarding their morning customers with $2 grande iced drinks when they return with a receipt after 2 PM the same day. That's a 50% discount in some cases.

The promotion, originally offered in select markets, is going nationwide until, you guessed it, September 2.

Grab a Frosty Mug

I rarely drink soda these days. When I was a kid I loved the stuff... Pepsi, Coke, Pepsi Light (the one with lemon), Triple Cola, 7-Up... it didn't matter. I just liked soda. By my teenage years Mountain Dew was my drug drink of choice, an addiction that continued well into my college years. I even wrote about what they were doing to my Dew in an early incarnation of what was to become this zine/blog/website.

These days soda is not high on my list of beverages. While I do have a trio of new Mountain Dew flavors in my fridge for tasting and voting purposes, I drink more water now than anything.

But if I do have a soda it's probably going to be a root beer. There's just something special about chasing down a burger or dog with a cold, frosty mug filled with the stuff. Apparently, the NY Times agrees as the gray lady decided to take a look at 25 root beers and rate them.

Thanks to Chris for the tip.

Three Weeks Till Christmas... Let the Festivities Begin!

Though I'm grossly disappointed – again – by the absence of Holiday Spice Pepsi on supermarket shelves, I know just the thing to cheer me up.

Yes, it's time to start listening to weird and wonderful holiday music again.

Today, we've got not one but two offerings of found tape madness from the folks at Sweet Thunder. Check out a Pac-Man Christmas Story but whatever you do don't forget the Christmas Rap.
